One of the highlights of Chaitra Navratri is the Kalash Sthapana, or the ceremonial installation of the Kalash, which symbolizes the presence of the divine goddess in the household. This ritual is performed on the first day of Navratri, marking the beginning of the nine-day festival. Throughout Chaitra Navratri, devotees engage in chanting hymns, reciting prayers, and offering fruits, flowers, and sweets to the goddess. Special bhajans and kirtans are also organized in temples and community gatherings, filling the air with devotional fervor and spiritual energy. As the festival progresses, devotees also observe Ram Navami with great reverence, celebrating the birth of Lord Rama with elaborate rituals and festivities. It is believed that worshipping Goddess Durga during Navratri and Lord Rama on Ram Navami bestows blessings, protection, and prosperity upon devotees.

Chaitra Navratri holds a special significance as it heralds the arrival of spring, a season of renewal, rejuvenation, and growth. It is a time for spiritual reflection, inner purification, and devotion to the divine, as devotees seek the blessings of Goddess Durga for peace, happiness, and prosperity in their lives.

These nine days hold special importance as devotees dedicate themselves to worshipping Goddess Durga. On the first day of Navratri, devotees offer prayers to Mata Shailputri, marking the commencement of the auspicious festival. Chaitra Navratri begins on the first day of the waxing phase of the Chaitra month in the Hindu lunar calendar. This year, the Pratipada Tithi of Chaitra Shukla Paksha started on April 8th at 11:50 PM and will conclude on April 9th at 08:30 PM. According to Hindu beliefs, the day begins at sunrise, so the Ghatasthapana, or the ceremonial installation of the Kalash, is performed on April 9th.

During Chaitra Navratri this year, it is believed that Goddess Durga will arrive riding a horse. However, it’s worth noting that the horse is not considered an auspicious vehicle for Goddess Durga and is seen as a symbol of warfare and natural disasters, indicating a shift in power.

On the first day of Chaitra Navratri, which is the Pratipada Tithi, both Sarvarth Siddhi Yoga and Amrit Siddhi Yoga are prevalent. These yogas are considered highly auspicious for undertaking important activities. On April 9th, the Ghatasthapana, or the ceremonial installation of the Kalash, will be performed during the Abhijit Muhurat from 12:04 PM to 12:54 PM due to the presence of Vaidhriti Yoga until 02:17 PM. This auspicious period lasts for only 50 minutes. Goddess Durga is particularly fond of the color red, so it is advised to purchase a red-colored seat for the deity.

Apart from this, for Kalash Sthapana, you will need a clay pot, barley seeds, clay, water-filled Kalash, sacred thread, cardamom, cloves, camphor, vermilion, whole betel nuts, whole rice grains, coins, and five mango or Ashoka leaves. Additionally, a coconut wrapped in red cloth and tied with a sacred thread should be placed on top of the Kalash. Afterward, the Kalash should be placed in the center of the vessel filled with clay where barley seeds have been sown.

With the establishment of the Kalash, devotees also take a pledge to observe the nine-day fasts of Navratri. If desired, devotees can also light an unbroken lamp in the name of the Goddess along with the Kalash Sthapana.
